Why You’ll Love This Experience

Discover everything you need to know before booking—who can join, what to bring, and why our bioluminescent tours are a must-do Orcas Island experience.

What Is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is the natural phenomenon where certain organisms emit light. In the waters around Eastsound, this glow is primarily due to dinoflagellates—tiny plankton that light up when disturbed. This creates a mesmerizing display, especially on dark nights.

Is It Safe to Kayak at Night?

Yes, kayaking at night is safe when proper precautions are taken. Our experienced guides are familiar with the local waters and will ensure your safety throughout the tour. We provide necessary equipment, including headlamps and life jackets, to enhance visibility and safety.

When Is the Best Time to See Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is best viewed during the darkest nights of the month, typically around the new moon. For this reason, our bioluminescent kayak tours are only offered on select nights each month during the summer and early fall.

What Should You Bring?

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, we recommend bringing:

  • Water shoes or sandals with straps

  • Warm layers (avoid cotton)

  • Rain jacket

  • Headlamp (if you have one)

  • Water bottle

  • Snack

  • Dry bags are provided

Who Can Participate?

Our bioluminescent kayak tours are suitable for individuals aged 8 and above. No prior kayaking experience is necessary, making it an excellent activity for families and beginners. We use tandem kayaks to ensure stability and comfort.

What Can You Expect on the Tour?

Our bioluminescent kayak tours offer a unique opportunity to witness the glowing waters up close. As you paddle through the calm waters, the movement of your kayak and paddle will illuminate the plankton, creating a trail of light behind you. In addition to the bioluminescence, you might encounter other marine life such as jellyfish, shrimp, and even seals.
